In an effort to provide a way for UPTA members to share their opinions on the PTA Full Vote we have opened this forum. Please be kind and civil to each other. We welcome all opinions as it is important to be fully informed before casting a vote. You can read the list of UPTA Pros and Cons HERE.

The more I consider the the issue, the more I have to give consideration to giving PTAs a full say in their future. We, as PTs, have cultivated this relationship with PTAs over the past decade, deciding that they are the only extender of our care. Even in our state practice act, PTAs are limited to working under a PT and no other. We created this relationship and these provisions. We perpetuated the language of the practice act. I'm fully in favor of retaining control of our state association and other points brought up in the CONS article but we cannot, in good conscience, leave out the professionals that we have made subservient without a self determining voice.

I never have understood valuating a person's status, as a valued member in a professional organization, as a half vote or no vote. All members of our association bring significant value to our profession and thus need to have equal voice. This is an important step in improving the strength of our Association and Profession. I am for a full vote for PTAs. Historically we can show through membership data that inclusion of PTAs has been beneficial for membership and participation in our chapter. For example, in 2012 when PTAs were licensed we saw an increase in PTA membership of over 400%. Currently the percentage of licensed PTAs in the state who are members of the APTA is only 15% compared to 30% for licensed PTs in the state. PTAs are invited associate members of the APTA, as such we do not have the full benefits of membership, we can't run for chapter president or delegate. But, as members in good standing we should have the same ability to vote for our elected representatives. PTAs want to be included in the decisions that affect our profession, and we are capable of making sound judgments that will help to determine policy, ethical practice and patient advocacy.

I am for full vote of PTA's. PTA's are valued members of the physical therapy community and the APTA and deserve the same voting privileges.

This is a vote that is long overdue. PTA's have supported, and continue to support, the APTA and the UPTA in many ways, including serving in state and national positions that further the profession of physical therapy. The number of chapters and sections within the APTA that have already approved this measure continues to grow, and show the respect that PTA's have nationwide.

I strongly encourage all members to consider the importance of the full vote for our PTA members. I would love to see Utah follow suit with the other states that have implemented the full vote at the Chapter level.

I think that as a PTA we should have a full vote, especially since our jobs are being given to aides rather than PTA's. It's a scary trend that I've been worried about for awhile. There are no jobs for PTA's anymore. We've gone to school, and the continuing education and we are treated as if we have not. Aides are given to teenagers, and college students and they are told to do the job of a PTA, which is against the practice act. It's very discouraging. I wonder if anyone else has noticed this trend or not? And if it would even benefit a PTA to have a full vote, when our jobs are becoming obsolete in the state of Utah.
